Were you preparing the way with all these other Carlos Nino collabs? And how does Andre, um, stack up against or alongside them? I'm wrestling with this myself while trying to listen with an open mind, as always.

I started off by listening to records made by his collaborators on the album (Niño but also Matthewdavid, Shabaka, VCR, Parks), drifted a little bit to other Leaving/music under a tree scene, also listened to some hip hop that was released the same day, plus my daily Armand Hammer intake, and finally Kate’s record also released on Friday. Yesterday I finally listened to NBS twice in a row, quite loudly, and ... well it grew on me with the second listen. It’s definitely an “outsider” album, but it never really gets too weird or pushes itself anywhere particularly challenging. If anything what’s challenging is the length, it can be a bit boring. And don’t get me wrong, I often like boring things. I dunno. I think this record will be a gateway for a lot of folks, but I’m not sure it will stand as much of a marker beyond that. But we’ll see. And for all the folks complaining they want bars, there’s so much good hip hop coming out these days, much of it made by folks in their 40s, so I hope people will support those artists rather than complaining about what Dre didn’t give us.
