My Mid-Year Mini-Review Marathon is running long (70 releases) so I’ll need a bit more time to finish that up. In the meantime, I want to share a new release of mine under my old moniker, the new objective, which I revived for Archive Fever (2023) after a few years hiatus. Usually my work under my own name is either field recording based, or a collaboration with other musicians, while the new objective tends to be more musical, or at least make use of more conventional musical instruments. These 50 tracks are mostly pretty short, and are something of a departure for me, but also kind of draw on all aspects of my practice under that name.
HARMONY & MEMORY
I spent the month of January 2025 doing a sound art residency at Centro Negra in Blanca (Murcia), part of AADK Spain. All 100 banks in my EHX 22500 loop pedal were finally full, and so to procrastinate starting my new works, I spent my first few days in the residency reviewing my old loops, with the expectation that'd I'd wipe the memory card to make space for new ones.
My fellow artist-in-residence, Tom Sibley, liked what he heard and encouraged me both to release the work, and to simply swap out the memory card for a new one. So, thanks to Tom, here is a new release under my the new objective moniker.
The EHX 22500 features asynchronous A and B loop capabilities, allowing the user to pitch the samples up or down an octave and to reverse them. I utilized these playback features and mixed the two loops, with my EHX Memory Man pedal connected to my mixer's aux send/return to help smooth the transitions. I did two long sessions, which I later cut up into discreet tracks. Samples that feature prominently on previous releases have mostly been excised, though sharp listeners familiar with my work may recognize some familiar sounds. I changed the order of the tracks slightly, and this is the result.
The sounds heard come from a wide variety of sources, including live instrumentation (mostly guitar, synths, drum machines) and sampled material, often snippets captured while simply listening to music.
Happy Listening.
(This release can also be found on all the shitty streaming services if that’s your thing)
