New York’s Blank Forms Editions recently sent out an email collecting recollections on the life and work of Dean Roberts (1975–2024), who sadly died at the age of 49 in Berlin earlier this year. Roberts was a musician and composer from New Zealand, known for his work with the trio Thela in the ‘90s, with the trio Autistic Daughters in the ‘00s, and his solo work as White Winged Moth and under his own name. He released records on many great labels, including Mille Plateaux, Kranky, Erstwhile, Formacentric and others.
In April 2023, Blank Forms Editions released May 99, a live recording of Charles Curtis, Alan Licht, and Dean Roberts, made during the trio's eleven-stop tour of Europe in 1999. Dean passed away unexpectedly in August 2024. Here, Charles and Alan reflect on what it was like to know and work with him.
