A CLOSER LISTEN weekly #42
New features announced, interview with Andrea Belfi, and latest reviewa
Dear Listeners, are you ready to take A Closer Listen. What did you think of our Fall Music Previews this year? Hats off to Richard for sorting through all that. So many records to look forward to. New Aho Ssan, with contributions from Nico Jaar, Moor Mother, clipping. and more? Yes please. jaimie branch’s posthumous Fly or Die masterpiece? Know I already bought that. The latest from Irreversible Entanglements, newly signed to the legendary Impulse! Records(!)? A new record from Armand Hammer!? Plus new records from Kate Carr, Matana Roberts, Christopher Tignor, CV & Jab, Jlin, KMRU, Moritz von Oswald, Patrick Shiroishi… What an embarrassment of riches. Don’t let anyone tell you that contemporary music is lacking, we’re living in an absolute golden age. Luckily there are folks like us digging through the glut to let you know what’s worth your time. And at the end of the day, we’ve got something for everyone.
Out of the Box
I’ve teased this new feature for a while, and decided that it simply can’t be contained within our standard bi-weekly missives. Out of the Box deserves its own post, so look out for those under separate heading. The first installment it coming very soon, as every two weeks, on the off weeks, I’ll share a post written just for Substack, writing about a seven inch from my collection. First up, Minor Threat’s posthumous three song EP, Salad Days.
In Conversation
Speaking of new features, last night I sent out the first installment of In Conversation, with Lino Capra Vaccina. I’ll use that heading to share unpublished writing and archival interviews, usually just for paid subscribers. So, please, consider throwing me some change. There’ll be a lot more coming, including exclusives mixes and more.
SOUND PROPOSITIONS RETURNS FOR SEASON FOUR
The latest season of our in-house podcast, produced by me, has begun, and honestly it’s the most exciting conversations so far. Lots of great stuff coming up, beginning with:
Episode 31: FREE TIME – with Andrea Belfi
Andrea Belfi discusses his latest album, Eternally Frozen, a canon-based composition for percussion, electronics, and brass ensemble. Inspired by a visit to LA’s Museum of Jurassic Technology, Belfi draws upon the story of Deprong Mori, a mythological bat that could use its powers of echolocation to phase through solid matter, before being captured by an American researcher, “eternally frozen” in lead. Movement, circularity, and stasis are all terms that also describe Belfi’s interests as a composer. We discuss his origins in Italy’s punk scene, his time as drummer of the noisy instrumental rock band Rosolina Mar, opening for Thom Yorke, and the development of his unique approach to solo performance as a drummer.
Listen over on Soundcloud, or even better, subscribe for free over at any of the podplaces (you know, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google, Stitcher, Radio Public, etc, or be like me and download the free RSS Radio app). Just search for “Sound Propositions.”
RECENT REVIEWS
Reviews are at the heart of ACL. Here are (excerpts from) a few of my favorite reviews we posted on the blog in the last few weeks. And we have a lot of old friends in this round up.
Bill Vine ~ Norwich Under the Water
The spire of Dunwich’s All Saints Church, which fell from the cliffs, is sometimes spotted poking from the surface of the North Sea. Last year, church ruins were unveiled during a drought at Ladybower Reservoir, whose creation drowned the village of Derwent. And soon, because of climate change, we may see Norwich Under the Water. A church bells tolls the fourth hour as people mill about the Norwich Cathedral cloisters, unaware of the danger. The bell becomes a drone: an elongated toll, a suspension of time. Bill Vine‘s hour-long composition runs concurrent with the sound of the community: the bell, the church, the land, the people all face recurrent flooding by 2030.
Giuseppe Ielasi ~ Down On Darkened Meetings
Low key yet lyrical melodies balance on the cusp between accessible and weird, at turns mournful and celebratory. Untitled tracks allow the listener to project whatever they’re feeling onto this music. And despite being informed that all sounds come from electric and acoustic guitars, there remains an ambiguity to the sound sources that makes room for surprise. On Down On Darkened Meetings, Giuseppe Ielasi‘s first solo LP for Oren Ambarchi‘s excellent Black Truffle label, we find the restless Italian experimenter continue his rekindled exploration of the guitar, an instrument he had long since put down in favor of microphones, small sounds, and signal processing. […] Down on Darkened Meetings will stand as the moment when Ielasi fully subsumed the guitar into his wider practice. A jewel in an already sterling discography, we’ll be enjoying this record for a long time, while anxiously awaiting whatever terra incognita Ielasi leads us into next.
Grails ~ Anches En Maat
Grails does not release a lot of music, but every release has been solid, so we’re not complaining. Anches En Maat is their first album in six years, their first in fifteen years to be recorded together in the studio, and the beginning of their third decade as a band. That last fact alone is worth celebrating. More importantly, Grails hasn’t just survived the passage of time, the quintet has remained relevant by changing with the times ~ even if, ironically, those changes involve the incorporation of retro flavors. Grails’ early albums were guitar-heavy post-rock excursions with hints of doomjazz and psychedelica. Midway through their career, their timbre became more cinematic, while the boundaries between Grails and side project Lilacs & Champagne began to blur. The group went from channeling Morricone (which they still do) to establishing what one might call a signature sound ~ or at least the signature sound of the modern Grails. Opening cut “Sad & Illegal” pretty much nails it, with dark synth introducing the drums and guitar. The strings enter halfway in, altering the entire tone to something one might expect from Air: referencing the past and making it their own. The Morricone guitar surfaces early in “Viktor’s Night Map,” but doesn’t dominate; it’s more of a marker for fans, a reminder that Grails continues to honor its influences.
Helena Hauff ~ fabric presents Helena Hauff
The once-common DJ-mixed CD has become rare in the streaming age, but some of the best series are still in action. Fabric Records has been a champion of this format for years, and shows no signs of stopping. Hauff is first and foremost an artist, so it’s important that the set starts with her own “Turn Your Sights Inward,” a modern electro banger with a killer bassline. Since the set begins at 140 bpm, one already knows that it is going to be filled with club cuts, an invitation to dance and to keep dancing for 77 minutes and 16 seconds, if one can. (Our suggestion: Gatorade.) From here she sneaks in the brighter chords of dynArec’s “Sunken Park,” creating a lovely contrast. The baseline of “Sights” continues throughout, purposely wobbling at the end as the next track emerges. We should mention that this is a vinyl mix ~ no shortcuts!
Radian ~ Distorted Rooms
Is Distorted Rooms rock or electronic? Is the music improvised or composed? On Radian‘s new album, loud sounds become soft and soft sounds become loud; guitar lines are cut free from their moorings; loops and layers intertwine. Each track becomes one of these Distorted Rooms, where the walls are always moving and the furniture is in flux. Even the cover image is spliced, a visual reflection of the music. This Vienna trio is interested not only in the ways in which music comes together, but the ways in which it can be taken apart and reassembled. At times their music approaches glitch and click ‘n’ cut, pointillist and precise. Every note is exactly where it needs to be; we imagine the members have very neat houses. The percussion as heard may not be live, but the “best pieces” of a live recording dissected and sampled. In like fashion, some of the percussive sounds come from sources other than drums. One can hear the process on opener “Cold Suns;” when the fuzzy guitar enters, it creates a contrast in perception. An unwieldy drum bar emerges at the halfway point, seemingly performing a duet with static. The result is akin to a microburst.
WaqWaq Kingdom ~ Hot Pot Totto
WaqWaq Kingdom gets waquier and waquier on Hot Pot Totto. Given their propensity for wordplay, we’re confident they won’t mind the pun. This still-crazy Japanese “minyo duo” is just as bizarre as ever ~ if this were not apparent from the cover art alone ~ yet their third album also brings a dose of reality, as it is dedicated to the climate crisis. “Ottotto” is the word for almost falling, but then regaining one’s balance, a positive spin on the situation Planet Earth is in right now; the “pot” refers to the duo’s melting pot of styles, heavily percussive and global, a wild cross between Missy Elliott, Tom Tom Club and The B-52s. Yes, there are lyrics ~ a rare instance on our site ~ but the music is so wild and experimental that we felt compelled to share it. WaqWaq Kingdom draws from all nations and influences, hand-picking whatever sounds catchy and fun, with a clear preference for colorful percussion. If we didn’t already know, we’d be hard-pressed to identify their nation of origin. “Religion Surfer” extends on this theme, beginning with gongs and continuing with bubbles. The singer muses about returning to bad habits, making them seem fun, though there’s only “one chance, one more,” and Jesus is coming; although if he arrives at the end of the song, he’ll be crashing a Rastafarian party.
